This year’s Unibattle competition promises to get students even more engaged with and excited about financial education – are you ready?!
What is Unibattle?
Unibattle is an annual cross-institution competition that we run for all our partner universities and colleges – this year will be the fifth anniversary of the battle!
In this global competition, our partners vie to be crowned the ‘Money Smartest’ by encouraging students to sign up to our Financial Wellbeing Platform and complete some financial learning during the period of Unibattle.
With 80+ financial topics covered, the student can choose the learning most relevant to them! The more lessons completed by your students, the higher up in the leaderboard your institution will climb!
After two weeks, which this year will run from 10am on Monday 8th November until 3pm on Friday 19th November (with prizes to be won by students twice-daily, on weekdays only), the university or college that has had the most signups and whose students have completed the most lessons will be crowned the title of ‘Money Smartest 2021’ – an extremely highly-coveted achievement!
Will the University of Reading finish at the top of the leaderboard for the third year in a row, or will another institution knock them off the top spot?
Why should my university or college get involved?
As has become ever clearer over the past few years, financial wellbeing plays a crucial part in the student experience – there’s a clear link between money concerns and mental health.
One of the best ways to promote financial wellness is by encouraging students to work on their financial literacy through financial education. By creating an event around this and bringing a competitive element to it, Unibattle promotes engagement with financial learning among our students – it’s the perfect opportunity to drive student sign-ups and engagement with our learning content over the fortnight, promoting financial awareness at such a crucial stage of the academic year which will encourage students to continue to engage with financial education in the future.
This year’s battle once again takes place during Talk Money Week – run by the Money and Pensions Service to get the nation talking about money. So there’s an extra reason to remember and to get involved!
Prizes
It is hoped that students can see the value of investing time in their financial education – but to ensure maximum engagement and encourage as many students to advance their financial learning as possible, each weekday, there will be some amazing prizes on offer.
Each student that completes a lesson on our online learning platform will be entered into a daily prize draw for the chance to win a great range of prizes, including Apple AirPods, an Amazon Kindle and a year’s subscription to a streaming platform of their choice (think Disney+, Spotify or Netflix). Every day, there will also be an extra prize of £10, which can take the form of a voucher or a donation to a charity of the winner’s choice.

Social media and other ways to promote Unibattle
Throughout the competition, we’ll be extremely active on Twitter and Instagram, sharing regular updates and announcing each prize winner. If one of your students wins a prize, we’ll also tag your institution on social media so you can re-share the post.
To create a buzz among your students and get them motivated to make sure your institution reaches the top of the leaderboard, you’ll need to spread the word about Unibattle on your social media accounts – use the hashtag #Unibattle to create lots of excitement around the fortnight and so we can re-share your posts!
Another great way to spread awareness amongst your institution’s students is through your student ambassadors, who students often engage better with. Get more ideas of how to engage students with Unibattle and financial learning in general from the Student Money Mentors at King’s College London.
We’re delighted to be taking part again this year after winning the 2016 Unibattle. We want to thank the other institutions for keeping the throne warm over the last couple of years, but UH are now back and ready to reclaim the crown.
So, do you want to the ‘Money Smartest’ for 2021? 👑 Then get your team and your students ready – we’ll see you on the 8th November!
