Unibattle returned this November for a fortnight full of financial learning and prizes, and ended up being the best one yet!
Our partner universities and colleges certainly made sure the fifth anniversary of Unibattle was one to remember with 38 partner institutions taking part around the world; the largest number to date, all vying to be crowned ‘Money Smartest Institution 2021’.
From the very start, staff at our partner institutions encouraged their students to sign up to our Financial Wellbeing Platform and complete financial learning content to help their institution climb the Unibattle 2021 leaderboard. This led to over 20,000 lessons being completed by students during the fortnight.

As well as the title of ‘Money Smartest Institution 2021’, there were lots of prizes on offer for students who completed some financial learning during the competition. Participating students won prizes which included Apple AirPods, an ASUS Chromebook and vouchers for a donation to charity in our daily prize draws, with winners coming from lots of different institutions including:
- University of Central Lancashire
- University of the West of England
- University of Suffolk
- University of Reading
- Sheffield Hallam University
Drum roll please… at the end of a hard-fought and very competitive Unibattle, the University of Chester came out on top this year and was crowned ‘Money Smartest Institution 2021’ – congratulations! Making up the top 3 were:
- University of Chester
- University of Southampton
- Staffordshire University
Across the fortnight, we saw an incredible 700 hours of video learning completed by students on our platform – it’s amazing to see such great engagement with financial education content and students so keen to improve their financial literacy.

As much as we love seeing students engaging with our platform, the most important thing is that they’re learning and improving their financial wellbeing by using it. So it was very satisfying to see that during Unibattle 2021, 61.2% of students reported feeling very confident about the subject learning that they’d undertaken after completing a lesson – we hope that the learning completed during Unibattle will have a positive impact on students’ lives for a long time to come.

A big thank you is in order for all of the university and college staff members who helped to make this year’s Unibattle such a success. By spreading the word on social media and elsewhere and really getting behind the competition, you helped us to reach many students and take another big step towards improving the financial wellbeing of young people around the world.
Hopefully, you’ll join us in continuing to improve student financial wellbeing by taking part in our Student Festival of Financial Wellbeing in February 2022!
The University of Chester and Chester Students’ Union are buzzing now it’s official that Chester has the country’s most engaged students this year in terms of their enthusiasm around taking personal responsibility for money matters. We will be laying down the gauntlet for next year’s Unibattle, but the main thing is that as many students as possible – wherever they are based – learn such important life skills as financial management.
